Mayor Purzycki Welcomes Rejuvenated Delaware Marathon Running Festival Back to the City
April 21, 2022
Mayor Mike Purzycki is excited to welcome a rejuvenated Delaware Marathon Running Festival back to Wilmington this Sunday, April 24, after a scaled-down version was held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The popular annual event includes a full- and half-marathon as well as 10K and 5K races, and this year will include the picturesque Jack A. Markell Trail. Festivities kick off at 7 a.m. at Tubman Garrett Riverfront Park with road closure information to follow. The marathon is staged each year by Corrigan Sports Enterprises (CSE), and we’re pleased to share their news release below.
This year’s full marathon distance at the Delaware Marathon Running Festival, scheduled for April 24, is on pace to be the largest field ever. Typically drawing a field of about 450 participants, the full marathon has already surpassed 627 registrants with days to go. To date, runners from 36 different states have registered along with three international participants. The full marathon’s largest field was 604 finishers in 2012.
The Delaware Marathon Running Festival allows runners to enjoy the best of Wilmington, including majestic views along the riverfront, parts of the beautiful downtown area, as well as scenic Jack Markell Trail. Runners who are not up for the 26.2-mile distance can select a half-marathon, 10k or 5k instead. In all, there will be over 2,500 participants participating in this year’s event. All races finish at Tubman Garrett Park along the Christiana River. Registrants will earn an Under Armour premium and a medal that features an Inspiration Coin to share with someone special.
Whether entrants are 50 State Club members seeking to expand their repertoire, serious athletes training to qualify for the Boston Marathon, or recreational joggers aiming for the simple satisfaction of having completed a marathon, the interest in this year’s marathon is unprecedented. Registration is open. Rates for all races increase on March 1st.
